Insurance companies

The photovoltaic plants with significant rated power (>500 kW) shows, during the commercial operation phase, a number of specific risks that may lead to dangerous events of great importance. Typical risks, for this category of plants , are  the propagation of fire in the area of interest of the plant, atmospheric phenomena (in particular, hail-storms, lightning strikes, etc.) , failures of plant components both of mechanical and electric type, workmanship and design defects, vandalic and fraudulent actions.

The Insurance companies that are present in the renewable energy sector offer insurance policies that cover both the immediate damages deriving from the above mentioned events and the possible economic losses due to the lack or reduced production of the plants (GSE incentives, lack of sale of electric energy to the Grid Operator) during the period during which the plant is fully or partially out of service for repair; obviously, it is necessary that the direct damage subject of claim be in accordance with  the policy conditions.

Very often the policy companies, besides to guard the plant  intervening for the events above mentioned, pay attention to the investment too through specific verifications on plant components in order to ascertain both their actual conditions and the causes of damages  and faults found. For these verifications the policy companies avail themselves by independent experts of the sector.

WINDFOR,  on the basis of the experience gained by its experts in many years , is in the position to supply all the technical assistance necessary for the evaluations of interest of the policy companies on the conditions of the components of a plant and on this last as a whole. In this context all the Services mentioned before flow together with the involvement of all the specialized tecnicalskill of the company.

In the following you may find some of activities of technical assistance of interest for the assessment of the photovoltaic plant in commercial operation.

  • Energy characterization of the site of interest

This activity has the aim to select and validate the available solar radiation data, to correlate them with those of long term measurement system, to evaluate the shadow effect of possible obstacles in the proximity of the plant, to define the net expected productions at the connection point with the grid, to assess the uncertainties considered in the evaluation of the expected productions (expected productions with the associated probability of 75 % and 90 % to be exceeded in 1 or 10 years).

  • Technical evaluation of the plant design

This activity has the aim both to assess the adequacy of some design choices (e.g., the right size of the cable network of the plant, the choice of LV, MV an HV equipment, etc.) and ascertain whether the working design of the Civil and Electromechanical works of the plant is in compliance with  the regulations and technical Standards in force.

  • Engineering of the commercial operation of plants

This activity has the aim to minimize operational risks, assess the quality of the services provided during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on the plant components, evaluate the operating results as a whole and compare the expected performance with the actual performance (benchmarking), analyze malfunctions and breakdowns of plant components, identify and solve problems concerning the operation of plants.

  • Plant inspections and fault analysis of plant components

This activity has the aim to perform both an independent evaluation of the conditions of the component of photovoltaic plants during the commercial operation phase and make independent analysis of malfunctions and failures of such components that should happen.

  • Performance evaluation of plants

This activity has the aim to pinpoint the operational factors that have conditioned the previous operation of a photovoltaic plant in order to define the criteria necessary both to improve the quality of the operation of the plant and estimate its future performances.

  • Technical Due Diligence on plants at every stage of development

This activity has the aim to collect the main technical information on the design aspects, constructional and operational characteristics of photovoltaic plant to be used in buying and selling negotiations.

  • Forensic and contractual engineering, claims management

This activity has the aim to provide qualified  technical assistance in legal disputes that may involve contractual aspects, hidden defects on plant components and the performance of the plant.
